*Bast, Joseph

    Joseph L. Bast is director, president, and CEO of The Heartland Institute, an independent, nonprofit research center founded in 1984 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois.

    Mr. Bast was The Heartland Institute's first employee, and oversaw its growth from an annual budget in 1984 of $20,000 to a budget in 2000 of $1.5 million and a full-time staff of eight.

    He has assembled a national advisory board of nearly 100 academics and professional economists; recruited and supports the organization's Board of Directors; built a donor base of nearly 1,300 individuals, corporations, and foundations; and has overseen publication of nearly 500 books, commentaries, studies, and other publications.

    Joe is the coauthor of five books on school reform, health care reform, economic development, and environmentalism. He is also the publisher of Intellectual Ammunition, a bi-monthly magazine, and two monthly newspapers: School Reform News and Environment News. All three publications are delivered to every state and federal legislator in the country, as well as some 2,000 journalists and public policy research organizations.

    Mr. Bast studied economics at the University of Chicago.

*Benson Ph.D., Bruce

    Professor Benson received his Ph.D. from Texas A & M University, and has taught at Pennsylvania State University and Montana State University.

    He is Senior Fellow at The Independent Institute, the DeVoe Moore Distinguished Research Professor of Economics at Florida State University, and Contributing Editor of The Independent Review.

    Dr. Benson is the author of nearly one hundred articles and reviews in scholarly journals and a contributor to twelve books.

    Professor Benson is also the author of:

*Bowman Ph.D., Robert

    Robert received his Ph.D. from Caltech in Aeronautics and Nuclear Engineering and is a retired Lt. Col., USAF with  101 combat missions in Vietnam.

    While serving under top secrecy, Dr. Bowman directed the Star Wars programs under presidents Ford and Carter and was an independent candidate for President in 2000. 

    Dr. Bowman has appeared on Firing Line, Crossfire, McNeil-Lehrer News Hour, ABC News, 700 Club, Donohue, and hundreds of local television and radio shows.

    His authored books include:

    • Star Wars: Defense or Death Star (ISSS 1984)
    • Star Wars: A Defense Insider's Case Against the Strategic Defense Institute (St. Martin's Press 1985)

    He also has authored dozens of OpEd pieces and articles in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Philadelphia Enquirer, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, the National Catholic Reporter, and America.

*Bruce, Peter

    Mr. Bruce holds degrees from Princeton, Harvard, and the University of Maryland.

    He taught introductory statistics at the University of Maryland, and professional development courses in resampling statistics for the Institute for Professional Education, American Statistical Association, U.S. Army, and other organizations.

    Peter is the co-owner of Resampling Stats, Inc. and the developer of most of the most recent versions of Resampling Stats software.

    He also supervises direct marketing and educational product development at Cytel Software Corp., makers of StatXact, LogXact, Egret, and other products.

    In his “spare” time, Peter supervises the development of NSF-funded "Box Sampler" software (a visually-oriented resampling tool for teaching statistics).

*Byczkowski Ph.D., Janusz

    Dr. Byczkowski began his scientific career at the Academy of Medicine in Gdansk, Poland, as a research assistant in toxicology in 1967, followed by faculty positions in biochemistry (1970) and pharmacology (1974).

    He received a MSc Degree in Toxicology, a Ph.D. in Pharmacology, and a DSc in Biochemical Pharmacology from the Academy in 1970, 1975 and 1979, respectively.

    Janusz has served as a cancer research scientist at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo NY with heavy emphasis on the development of experimental anticancer drugs and mechanisms of chemical carcinogenesis.

    He has also served as research scientist and assistant professor at the College of Public Health at the University of South Florida in Tampa FL, consultant to Pharmaceutical Specialties Inc. of Tampa FL, and as project scientist and study director for ManTech Environmental Technology Inc., at the Armstrong Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton OH.

    Dr. Byczkowski received his DABT certification from the American Board of Toxicology in and was senior toxicologist with TN & Associates Inc. in Cincinnati OH.

    Janusz is currently an independent consultant providing expertise to both governmental agencies (U.S. EPA, ATSDR) and the private sector (International Life Science Institute - Risk Sciences Institute, Versar Inc., Expert Resources Inc.).

    Dr. Byczkowski has been author or co-author of over 100 peer-reviewed articles, technical reports and book chapters, and has presented over 100 short communications.
